Questa distributed one of their periodic email newsletters this morning that included a link to a professional data mining company BrightPlanet. One of the documents on this site is a 67-page Guide to Effective Searching on the Internet. And one of the links in this document led me to the library of my alma mater, UC Berkeley, and a large assortment of materials prepared by the Berkeley library staff: Finding Information on the Internet: A Tutorial. This material contains overviews of search engine features, elaboration of Boolean functions, and suggestions on how and when to use meta search engines. Scanning the material, I felt it would be valuable for all of us in the seminar to examine it carefully and complete some of the tutorial exercises. I'll construct a homework assignment based on the material and distribute it before next Wednesday, with the intent to improve Internet searching strategies and, at the same time, help gather documentation for your seminar papers.
